Entering new markets

Nordic telecom know-how was indisputable and world renowned far beyond the Nordic national borders. This meant that many countries approached the Nordic companies for assistance when they wanted to open their market to mobile telephony. Sonera, with its eastward links, was able to create successful partnerships and stakes in mobile companies in many Eurasian countries long before the merger. In the Baltic countries, Telia and Sonera joined forces to build both fixed and mobile networks. They were on the scene even before the collapse of the former Soviet Union at the start of the 1990s. Telia also acquired experience of operating mobile companies abroad in the late 1990s, in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe.

After the liberalization of the telephone markets during the 1990s, both Telia and Sonera expanded outside of Sweden and Finland. Today TeliaSonera is an international group with a global strategy. The company is offering services in the Nordic and Baltic countries, the emerging markets of Eurasia, including Russia and Turkey, and in Spain. The articles in this section tell the story of this global expansion.

The Nordic countries

The internationalization of Telia's and Sonera's operations began long before the merger of the two companies in 2002. For both companies there were primarily two factors that pushed developments – deregulation of the national telephony markets and the fall of communism in Europe in the autumn of 1989. The events namely placed entirely new demands on telecommunications companies and opened several new markets. Read more
